Someone Else’s Dream Job

Someone Else’s Dream Job

It’s 8:13am. You’ve only been in the office since 8am and are already counting down until you can leave at 4pm.

You’ve successfully killed the first 13 minutes of the day getting your lunch bag into the fridge and making yourself a cup of tea (and standing there watching it steep), but you somehow have to survive another 7 hours and 47 minutes.

Oh, and it’s only Monday. So on top of the 7 hours and 47 minutes you have to get through today, you have to do it all over again tomorrow…and three more days after that, too.

You quietly wonder to yourself, as you sit down at your desk with a defeated sigh, how you ended up in a role you loathe so much. And yet, as much as you just want to get up and leave and never come back, you can’t.

Because they need you. They told you on your last performance review how fantastic of a job you’re doing, and even gave you a raise for all of your hard work.

So you can’t leave. Because, if you did, who would take your job? No one else could ever possibly want to do what you do. It’s practically torture.

But the thing is, at this exact moment, there’s someone out there who is unhappy in his or her role and is dreaming of doing a job exactly like yours.

Perhaps you work autonomously, pushing paper in a dull office all day, where the only sound you ever hear is the clicking keyboard keys; i.e. your version of hell.

And yet that’s exactly what this person craves to be doing, because they currently work as part of a large team in a noisy, chaotic office and struggle every damn day to connncentraaaaate.

So, here’s a thought. Instead of staying stuck in this job you can’t stand, maybe move the heck out tha way and let someone who would love it, have it.

And then, in turn, maybe someone else out there will give up a job they hate—making space for you to dive right in. Because while they may have hated it, that’s the job you daydream about.

Every type of job out there is someone’s dream job. So if you find yourself in a role that most definitely doesn’t fit with you—move on. Let someone else try it on. Because for them it might be juuust right.
