29 Apr Feeling Fear Around Making a Career Change? Try This.
Making a big career change (or even thinking about making one) can be hard.
It often requires stepping way outside your comfort zone and doing things you’ve never done before.
All of this newness tends to trigger fear. And, lemme tell ya, fear tends to way overreact.
You’ll start telling yourself totally untrue, but highly believable things like…
π I’m not good enough
π I’m never going to be successful doing this
π I’m going to disappoint my family and friends
π I should probably just keep doing what I’ve been doing; this new path has too many unknowns and I don’t want to take the riskβI’ll probably fail
Needless to say, this kind of negative self-talk isn’t helpful. At all. And certainly won’t get you where you want to go.
So here’s a pro tip for keepin’ it in check: have a photo of little you close by at all times.
And whenever fear starts rearing its ugly head and spouting all kinds of BS thoughts inside your mind, look at the photo and ask yourself “Would I say this to little me?“
Would you tell a younger you that they aren’t good enough? NO!
Would you tell them they’re a failure and a disappointment? Of course not!
And you certainly wouldn’t tell that cutie patootie faceβso full of excitement and wonder about the worldβthat they should accept being unhappy for the rest of their life because change is just too scary.
You would tell them they could do anything! Anything they put their mind to. You would tell them to reach for the stars.
Because they can. YOU CAN! You’re still that person, deep down.
Start talking to yourself the way you’d talk to a younger version of you, and see what happens.
Suddenly, a career change won’t seem so scary at all. It just might feel like the greatest adventure of your life!
