23 Oct Do You Have Any “Gifted Passions”?
When I was growin’ up, my Grandpa had a wall in his basement that was lined from floor to ceiling with issues of National Geographic, dating all the way back to 1965.
It was my favourite area of the house, and often the first place I’d go when I arrived there.
I’d carefully select one of the bright yellow magazine spines, wedge it out from the dozens that hugged it from either side, and then spend hours poring over its pages (the images especially, since the articles were often above my reading level at the time).
I lived in a small, rural town as a kid, so my world felt pretty small. But whenever I had a copy of National Geographic in my hands, it felt like I had the entirety of the natural world at my fingertips.
My affinity for nature carried on throughout my life, although I’ll admit I wasn’t always very aware of it.
That is, until earlier this year, when I was watching a National Geographic Live talk with the incredible Bertie Gregory.
It finally occurred to me, as I sat there all aflutter with joy, that this love and curiosity for the world and its wonders isn’t just a cherished part of my childhood, it’s a part of me.
But I didn’t put it there. It was given to me. A passion passed down from grandfather to granddaughter.
A “gifted passion,” as I’m termin’ it from here on out.
And I’m willing to bet that we’ve all got some.
When people come to me for coaching, they’re often on a mission to “find their passion.”
Something new and exciting that’s outside of themselves, that will get them all fired up and give purpose to their career.
But what if the fire you’re seeking is already within you?
What if it’s been there most of your life, passed down from someone who had a great influence on you?
So, go on, do some diggin’ around in your archives for the passions that have been gifted to you and explore themβfan the flames π₯
You may not have to go as far as you think to discover the kind of work you’re meant to do.
